Unit 5 Key Terms Mestizo a Spanish and Portuguese term that was used in the Spanish Empire and Portuguese Empire in Latin America to refer to Latin people of mixed European and Amerindian ancestry Conquistador is the term widely used to refer to the Spanish people - soldiers, explorers, and adventurers who brought much of the Americas under the control of Spain in the 15th through the 19th centuries following Europe's discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492. The leaders of the conquest of the Aztec Empire were Hernán Cortés and Pedro de Alvarado. Francisco Pizarro led the conquest of the Incan Empire. War of Independence was an armed conflict between the people of Mexico and the Spanish colonial authorities which started on 16 September 1810. The Mexican War of Independence movement was led by Mexican-born Spaniards, Mestizos and Amerindians who sought independence from Spain. Mexican Revolution
