Copyright 2008 by Cornell University Chapter 6 Pages 130-161 Summary In chapter six, Muñoz talks about labor resistance and labor unions in both the Hacienda CA and Hacienda BC tortilla factories. This chapter also explains how state policy and the labor market play a role in the rise and fall of the resistance cycle. In the beginning of the chapter, Muñoz talks about previous strikes at both the Hacienda CA and Hacienda BC plants. This chapter also gives examples of labor unions and other strikes in the maquila industry as well. In the Hacienda CA factory, there has not been any union organizing since 1997, and no other unions have attempted to organize for the production workers. The problem is that at in this factory, there is a combination of undocumented and documented workers. Due to the combination of workers, labor resistance has dwindled because immigration policies have become stricter and the undocumented workers fear that they will be deported if they do resist. While there are many undocumented workers inside the factory that form individual labor resistance movements, very few are turned into unions due to the workers status in the factory.
