Chapter 1 Notes Biology - the science of life 3 Themes 1. Evolution – populations changed over time from earlier life 2. Information transfer – survival depends on orderly transmission of info within and among organisms 3. Energy for life – solar energy flows through producers and consumers Characteristics of Life Cells – fundamental unit of life - only form new through division Unicellular – organisms consisting of a single cell performing all functions (protozoa) Multicellular – organisms consisting of billions of cells organized into tissues, organs, organ systems (cat) Plasma membrane – protective envelope around cell that separates from surrounding environment - regulates passage of materials DNA – deoxyribonucleic acid; genetic instructions/information Organelles – specialized inners of cell 2 Types of Cells: - Prokaryotic – bacteria and microscopic arachaea; structurally simple, no nucleus or membrane-enclosed organelles - Eukaryotic – all others; typically have membrane-enclosed organelles (i.e. nucleus –
