Acct 2301 / LI / Fall 2008 1 Southern Methodist University ACCT 2301: Fundamentals of Accounting I Fall 2008 Syllabus Professor: Zining Li Office: 388 Crow Office phone: 214-768-9293 Office Hours: T&W 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm E-mail: [email protected] & by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION The objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to U.S. financial accounting. Accounting is considered the language of business as it measures and records the economic activities and business transactions. The purpose of financial accounting is to provide information to owners of the firm and other interested parties to serve as the basis for making decisions about that firm . Students will gain an understanding of the principles and procedures of accounting. Students who successfully complete the course will be able to construct basic financial statements including the cash flow statement and to read and interpret U.S. corporate financial reports. REQUIRED MATERIALS Financial Accounting, Libby, Libby and Short; 6 th edition; McGraw-Hill Irwin; 2008 http://www.mhhe.com/libby6e CLASS FORMAT: This course is conducted as a combination of lecture and class discussion. I utilize PowerPoint slides as an outline for the material we will cover during each class period. The slides will be available on the course website. In each class session, new topics will be introduced. You are expected read the related readings before each class. I also recommend you attempt to complete the exercises for that day before we cover the topics in class. I will usually devote a part of each class period to the discussion and illustration of selected items. In addition, students may be called on to provide explanations for exercises in class. EMAIL AND COURSE WEBSITE: During the course of the semester, I will communicate with you via email messages sent to your mail.smu.edu account. You are responsible for the content of these email messages. The course website for this class http://zli.cox.smu.edu will provide useful course information. You will find class notes, homework solutions, handout materials, and announcements on this website. Please check regularly for new postings. OFFICE HOURS You are welcome and encouraged to stop my office anytime. Office hours will be held Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm at 338 Crow. Additional office hours are available by appointment. This class also has a teaching assistant, Tien Nguyen. Tien holds office hours on Mondays from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at 324 Fincher starting from September 8 th . You are encouraged to ask questions on lectures, textbook problems during her office hours.
