1 Critical Reading Guidelines PHILO 215: Critical Reading Guidelines The Early Modern texts we are going to read throughout the semester are not easy reading. They were either translated from another language, such as French, or written in seventeenth-century English that we are not accustomed to read. That is why reading these texts will require extra time and effort on your part. The following guidelines are designed to help you make the most of the reading assignments and complete the critical reading assignments. To complete these assignments, you should post your reactions to the reading assignments under the appropriate forum on the Discussion Board before each class. When you post on the Discussion Board, please make sure that you click “submit” rather than “save.” Your post will be published and available for others to read only if you click “submit.” You should write no more than one paragraph, approximately 100 words, reacting to the reading in question. For each reading assignment, you may do one of the following: Raise questions concerning the reading . For example: What does the author mean by saying that X? I think s/he means that Y. Discuss an interesting topic
