12 Angry Men Essay Victor Seo Block 2-4 The film, “12 Angry Men” shows many social psychological events. A kid is convicted of 1 st class murderer and a group of juries will decide if he is guilty or innocent. At the first vote, only one person votes not guilty and the number of people voting for innocence gradually increases. Upon examination, the film shows social psychology in deindividuation, group polarization, groupthink, normative social influence, fundamental attribution error, foot –in-the-door phenomenon, cognitive dissonance, prejudice, racism, ageism, conformity, and stereotyping. Deindividuation is loss of self-awareness and self-restraint occurring in group. After the second voting had taken place, a person had voted not guilty. Furious, Lee J. Cobb stood up and yelled at Jack Klugman without thinking. Also, he doesn’t even know if Klugman really did put not guilty. Later, Cobb apologized for his actions. Group Polarization is enhancement of a group’s prevailing attitudes through discussion within the group. When every person was allowed to speak their thoughts, this discussion strengthened the confidence of those preferential to a guilty verdict. Groupthink is the desire for harmony in a decision-making group overrides a realistic appraisal of alternatives. In the second vote, Joseph Sweeney had bravely refused to vote guilty. He had refused to fall into the groupthink trap, which could have killed an innocent life. Normative social influence
