The safety of GM food for human consumption has not been proven (even though its harmfulness hasn’t been either). Economic and sovereignty issues GM food could be a quick answer to starvation problems IF the countries with starving populations would accept it. BUT these countries are unwilling to adopt the new technology because the market for their produce (Europe) would likely reject it. (The Europeans are portrayed as being unnecessarily cautious.) Also, higher crop yields may not necessarily make the poor less poor as the margins may be lowered and big business may have more control. Also, the companies that hold the patents on the technology (like Monsanto) can effectively hold the poorer nations to ransom. Impact on the natural environment Once the GM technology is adopted, non-GM crops might be affected by replanting the corn, which could also have further economic consequences.
