Name: Wong Wei Min Tutor: Mr. Victor Cole Class: E8 An Overheated Argument for Global Warming In “Global Warming Is Good for You” ( The Guardian , August 5, 2001) Duncan Steel of the Joule Physics Laboratory concludes that global warming is essential for protecting the Earth from the next Ice Age. He reasons firstly that the usual state of the Earth is cold (“the norm is Ice Age”) and small drops in temperature can trigger a feedback loop which multiplies the cooling effect. Thus, he believes it is better to keep our planet warming, e.g. through greenhouse gas emissions, than risk falling into a new Ice Age. He also reasons that that changes in climatic conditions that result in the movement of peoples are a common feature of human history and we need to be prepared to adapt, even if it means abandoning low-lying cities.
