Quiz 2 Student’s Name Time: 1 hour Date: 04 Apr 2009 Tutorial Group Grade: U / S / E Question 1 (total: 10 marks) The construction shown in Figure Q1 is used to hold a cylinder. The cylinder has a mass M = 10 kg and a radius r = 0.10 m. The force exerted by the cable at C and D and the spring connecting the points E and F hold the gripping tongs together so that the cylinder cannot fall down. The spring has an original length L s = 0.08 m in an un-stretched state (if the force in the spring is F s = 0). The original length L s is smaller than the distance between F and G. That is, the spring as shown in the construction in Figure Q1 is pre-stretched by a certain magnitude to exert an initial force F s if there is no cylinder in the gripping tongs. The magnitude of the pre-stretch can be calculated from the geometry of the construction. Determine the minimum stiffness k s of the spring so that the gap beneath the cylinder (at point K) does NOT open up due to the forces exerted by the cylinder. For simplicity, all surfaces are assumed to be ideally smooth so that no friction occurs
