January 24, 2011 1. Metabolism: acquire and regulate use of energy (Catabolic/ Anabolic reactions) 2. Organization Primary produces have most energy then goes to primary consumers to secondary consumers to tertiary consumers Heterotroph: “eating”, getting nutrients through food digestion Most energy is lost as heat Entropy: o Heat causes molecules to move more rapidly o High entropy: molecules moving rapidly, move faster = more collisions, faster reaction o When you increase entropy then system becomes more unstable o More energy when less entropy but lower energy when entropy increases Food molecules-break down into useful forms of energy and there is a lose of heat o Use this to power anabolic pathways that make molecule to form cells Catabolic: breakdown, exergonic (G or free energy is negative (loss)) Anabolic: building, endergonic (G or free energy is positive (gain)) ATP: phosphate groups in ATP has a lot of potential energy
