Sofia Medeiros HIS 222 Chapters 27, 28 and 29 Part I – Definitions Define each of these 15 words, explaining what it is and how it pertains specifically to American history. 1. Good Neighbor Policy: The policy of President Franklin D. Roosevelt toward Latin America. The term was taken from Roosevelt's first inaugural address on March 4, 1933. The policy reversed a previous attitude of interventionism in the internal affairs of Latin American nations. Specific acts included the repeal of the Platt Amendment authorizing U.S. intervention in Cuba in 1933, and the withdrawal of U.S. Marines from Haiti in 1934. 2. Isolationism: Isolationism refers to America's longstanding reluctance to become involved in European alliances and wars. Isolationists held the view that America's perspective on the world was different from that of European societies and that America could advance the cause of freedom and democracy by means other than war. 3. Lend Lease/Cash & Carry Programs: Lend-Lease was a program of the United States Federal government during World War II which enabled the United States to provide the Allied nations with war material while the US was still officially a neutral country. The cash-and-carry policy was a WWII policy under Roosevelt. It allowed the sale of material to belligerent countries, as long as the recipients arranged for the transport and paid immediately in cash. Its purpose was to instill a sense of neutrality between the United States and European countries while still giving aid to Britain. 4. Dec. 7, 1941: Was the date of the attack on Pearl Harbor was an unannounced military strike conducted by the Japanese navy against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor , Hawaii on the morning of December 7, 1941. It resulted in the United States' entry into World War II . 5. Manhattan Project: The Manhattan Project is the code name for the US government's secret project that was established before World War II and culminated in the development of the nuclear bomb. The idea of forming a research team to create a nuclear weapon was endorsed in a letter than Einstein sent to Franklin Roosevelt, the president of America at the time. 6. Island Hopping Campaign: After the Battle of Midway , the United States launched a counter-offensive strike known as "island-hopping," establishing a line of overlapping island bases, as well as air control. The idea was to capture certain key islands, one after another, until Japan came within range of American bombers. 7.
