History103 notes-09.21.9-The Early Modern Church: Colonization and Conversion- explorations to church changes Religion is starting to become more important in the 15 th century, only one option for religion in RCchurch. Heresy becomes a problem-going against church teachings and doctrines. There were political and social problems as well. Heresy is national stain, it was a plague-you must do something about it, if your neighbor is a heretic…. I. The Problem of Heresy -specific technical meaning, how that affected ideas of conversion, and colonization. Going to focus on Spain, the way they dealt with this problem was prevalent throughout the world. Religion is starting to play an important role Before 1517, before reformation, there is only one option for religion, orthodox, you can only be a roman catholic church. People were bending the churches teachings, some didn’t understand the religion, there was a variety in understanding of religion. Every person who was going against the formal doctrines and teachings of an accepted religious body-heresy -this was a problem that was seen well beyond religion. -this had a lot of social and potlical charge as well. -if your going against the church’s teachings, what else are you against? -heresy, is seen an anti-thoritative -i t is linked to social disorder, it’s a way to take root in rebellion. - the 3 rd thing is that heresy is not seen as an individual stain, but a stain on the whole country.

----the reason for this is if there is a band of heretics, and if they weren’t dealth with, the whole country could be excommunicated from the church. -even if your not a heretic and you are living near one, and don’t do anything about it. ---it was also thought that this was a plague. Ex: spitting in church, trading livestock, being quiet in church service is heresy… ---large heresies that were tracked down by the roman catholic church, because they were threats ----all these 3 groups, the walds, loll, huss’s were told to not to do something, but they continued to do what they believed in….this is what made them dangerous Look at poor, and looked at catholic priests(living in luxury)-said it’s not right. Priests should be detached from world. Catholic church calls him a heretic. Stressed priests read bible, not people(misinterpret). Go back to teachings of Christ. -came under peter valdez-heretic. -criticized the RCC for poverty, while he saw church living in riches. -said that this didn’t match up with priests giving up worldly possessions. -priests should read bible, not people(misinterpretation). -stressed ideas similar to that of Luther of going back to teachings of Christ. a)Waldensians -named after peter valdes, who preached ideas of salvation, of life. Used poverty to basically criticize the roman catholic church, starts in the early 12 th century. -Peter Valdes-he looked at the splendor that clerics were living in, and said that
