History 103 notes 9.23 .9 Luther's Reformation and Lutheran Family Values Thinking about the Reformation How do historians deal with the issues on reformation. -reform from within or from without? Reform from the top down, or the bottom up? The problem of Church and state the problem of heresy .-it doesn't go away, it just increases , the catholic church looked at the reformers as heretics. The problem of the "loyal oppisition"-inability to see tolerance of religion, in the monarchs. They don't have a model to follow against loyal oppoisition, that it is ok Where does the motivation for religious reform begin? How did all these events take place in such a short time? There is a new and changing relationship between the church and State. I. Contributing Factors to Reformation. There are things that lead up to ref. -we know as historians know that we can see the leading factors of ref. -clergy vs Laity -by 1500 there is an enormous anticlerical feeling, there are struggle between clergy that wwant to maintain their religion practice, against the Laity the people ordinary of the church. In the Laity perspective, church had become a symbol of corruption, maybe there was something that was wrong with the way that they dealt with religion. -the church became very complex, enormous welath, bureaucracy, power, the medieval church had basically got away from the ideal faith in the bible. ---this happens to every institution, you eventually end up changing the end in goal for the inst. -nobody could agree on how to fix it. - they wanted to focus on law, and other things rather than look at Laity is going thru crises, fall of const, black death, these people are looking for input into their spiritual lives. - Devotio Moderna - was a 14th century, within context of black death, argued that the laity and clergy join together, live common lives together, and live lives of individual piety, educate one another-clergy would share with one another. Into the new devotion----a way to respirtualize themselves without having to break from the catholic chruch -clergy and laity should lead active christian live in the society. -the laity -Anticlericalism-the laity figure out that the clergy is not going to be addressign their grievances. The people criticize the chruch for mercantilism, they said that they dont want a faith that can be bought -failure to stamp out clerical abuses -simony-buying and selling of church offices, alexander, the borgese, chezare borgie, got bought a cushy spot, this person may not even show up. Was seen as a way that could rob people was a way to take money from people -indulgences- a time off pass in purgatory(the middle ground between heaven and hell-your chances to work off your son, in purgatory, a working tank where your work off your sins, you worked it off, your ) you can buy an indulgence, selling salvation, so you don't have to go into purgatory -Secular Forces-society is changing, there are rulers that want into the business of religion. -New monarchs
