The Atlantic Community and the Slave Economy-what it means to be enlightened is a problem. At    same time this is happening people are starting to talk about human rights. Western European soc   acting in a contradicitory fashion, enslaving people. There are two competing impulses. Concern f   human rights, and  We have an economy coming to commerce and slavery. Western EU upgrading in contradictory fa   That is, slaving people while talking about human rights in public. I. T he atlantic Community: Speculation, Colonialism, and Trade .-by the 18 th  century  Western Europeans were active….Easier to travel by ship than by horse. Focus on the  blue bits of the seas. The result of this sea lanes in the world in order to travel created a  new economy that was more diverse, complex than any other international system. There  was an economic system based on seas. The difference is a scale, Now there is ocean  navigation, that was capital intensive, more naviagation, more planning was involved.  The Atlantic ocean is what we are talking about. Western European states such as spain,  England, Portugal, dutch, Netherlands, exploit their coastlines.   By 18th century, western eu are active throughout the worlds. Indian, Pacific and Atlantic  oceans crowded during this time. Busy and well traffic. Focus on the seas. Economic system  based on water during ancient world. Mediteranean is small land. Now we are talking about  (atlantic community) ocean navigation, much more capital intensive. Need changes in finance  and planning. Different! Atlantic goes all the way down to South Am and South Af, hence  this is huge body water we are talking about. Spain, potugal, england, france and netherlands are interested in exploring the atlantic. At that  time it is an issue of scale. There was an increase in participation,  more dynamic power.  France and Spain and England try to use water to expand the countries profile. - In the 17 th  and 18 th  century there is a increase in participation, scale. There is a new power  dynamic, France, Spain, and England-these guys used the ocean to forward their own  profile by taking advantage of one other.  - Spain has the most extensive trade network in the 17 th  and early 18 th  century. Extend to  North Africa, and thru pacific. One reason that it had this was because their trade network  included the pacific and the atlantic ocean. What were they trading. Labor intensive

activities, mining, sugar plantations, plantations, they were the most lucrative long term investments. Religious conversion is also happening as the swarm of economy. There is an economic and conversion based activity going on. -
