Unformatted text preview: I. The Problem of Heresy-specific technical meaning, how that affected ideas of conversion, and colonization. Going to focus on Spain, the way they dealt with this problem was prevalent throughout the world. Religion is starting to play an important Before 1517, before reformation, there is only one option for religion, orthodox, you can only be a roman catholic church. People were bending the churches teachings, some didn’t understand the religion, there was a variety in understanding of religion. Every person who was going against the formal doctrines and teachings of an accepted religious body-heresy-this was a problem that was seen well beyond religion.-this had a lot of social and potlical charge as well.-if your going against the church’s teachings, what else are you against?-heresy, is seen an anti-thoritative-it is linked to social disorder, it’s a way to take root in rebellion.-the 3 rd thing is that heresy is not seen as an individual stain, but a stain on the whole country.----the reason for this is if there is a band of heretics, and if they weren’t dealth with, the whole country could be excommunicated from the church.-even if your not a heretic and you are living near one, and don’t do anything about it.---it was also thought that this was a plague. Ex: spitting in church, trading livestock, being quiet in church service is heresy…---large heresies that were tracked down by the roman catholic church, because they were threats----all these 3 groups, the walds, loll, huss’s were told to not to do something, but they continued to do what they believed in….this is what made them dangerous a)Waldensians-named after peter valdes, who preached ideas of salvation, of life. Only priests should read the bible-the scriptures are allegorical, people have different interpretations, so they were put under some certain peoples ideas. They killed heretics at the stake. If you put them in the ground, the heresy from their body still can spread, if you burn them, their heresy goes away. Valdez is an early heretic, his ideas are the same ideas as luther, henry VIII, this idea that they needed to get back to the teachings of Christ, to ad fonts Christianity, go back to primary. b)Lollards (England)9.15.9-John Wycliffe, 1324-1384- come under this guy, lolls, and this was during the black plague, they argued that the church had gotten corrupted the holy sacrament, baptism, marriage, holy communion, that were at the core of the religious practice, what they wanted to do was to reform them to a form of the New testaments teaching of the Bible....
