Cognitive dissonance I. difference between our cognitions and attitudes and our behavior - how our behaviors and our attitudes mix - we rationalize our behavior to reduce dissonance we might have between our actions and our attitudes; we like to be seen as consistent - Foot in the door: People's Temple and Cults 2 groups of houses: a) experimenters give them "drive carefully" flyer and ask to put in window b) experimenters don't do anything; after 2 weeks go back to both sets of houses & want to put huge "drive carefully" sign in front yards; result: people who had accepted small notice accepted the huge sign on the front yard-- why? had already started to give in to the demands, already do one thing, so much do the other (one postcard, so that is their attitude, and so bring attitude into past action- big sign) - methods: knock, look sad, ask for glass of water, sit down and talked to people, go to living room and say it's beautiful, move a few things around; if can get the person to move something, new they had a sale - foot in the door: get someone to do a little bit for you, then have them do a lot more - technique has been used in recruiting people to join cults-- ex.
