Effective Conflict Management for  Executives & Managers As a manager you will inevitably have to deal with conflicts that arise as  you run the business. These can be between other managers, managers and  employees, employees and employees, employees and clients and even  clients and management. Learning to handle these types of situations  effectively is paramount to maintaining control and being effective no  matter what the scenario. Not only are you “chief cook and bottle washer” and hold responsibility for making sure things runs smoothly, you also have to play a role that is part parent, coach, mentor and at ties disciplinarian. Your approach to conflicts can make all the difference in creating an environment that is healthy or one that is caustic. A healthy environment improves morale and spurs employees to do their best. A caustic environment affects everyone, puts people on pins and needles and can quickly escalate to consume the entire company if not handled immediately. Conflict in any workplace is inevitable. The average worker spends five days a week, at least forty hours a week, working in very close proximity to their co-workers. This amount of time often is more than the time they spend awake with their families. When people spend that amount of time together, certain actions and characteristics will lead to conflict as sure as you are a manager. These actions can include gossip, backstabbing, work disagreements, jealousy, envy, feelings of unfairness, favoritism and just simple personality conflicts. There is an old saying that says, “just because I work with you does not mean I like you” and we all have heard the mantra of how “it is nice to be liked and respected, but better to be just respected
