Period of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) socially primitive comparatively speaking social stratification was very well defined no social mobility, unwritten rule of maintaining blood and kinship distinctions kept the tribes within themselves, esp the richer 6 th and 7 th Century Persian Empire Roman Empire Islam spreads through these empires in 20 years Nomadic tribes populated the desert region the most important of which was the Quraysh tribe isolationist society that didn't have much contact outside of peninsula except for trade caravans Mecca major trade center religious emphasis lightly populated peninsula most aspects were based around the natural activities that could be in the environment total disregard for writing except poetry gifted for graphic memory most of the poetry was oral tradition poet was a prestigious profession poets never presented poetry themselves unless it was a very special occasion
