Short Story Exam LIT 2081 Name:______________________________________ Part I. Identify the title and author of each story that the following quotes are taken from. Then briefly discuss the significance of each quote. How does the quote highlight the deeper meaning of the story? 1. The way she looked, Mary Anne made you think about those girls back home, how clean and innocent they all are, how they’ll never understand any of this, not in a billion years. Try to tell them about it, they’ll just stare at you with those big round candy eyes. Title and Author:_”Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong” by Tim O’Brien _______ To the soldiers fighting in Vietnam, Mary Anne represents the idyllic “good American girl”—innocent, happy, untouched by the ruinous effects of a bloody war. That innocence is what draws the men to Mary Anne when she arrives in Vietnam; what they hold on to when the going gets rough. This illustrates that during times of great hardship, we  tend to desperately grasp on to innocence in an attempt to keep ourselves  sane and to hold onto our own humanity. 2. “Our lives aren’t sordid, are they darling? Are they?” She flung her arms around his neck and drew his face down to hers. “We’re happy, aren’t we, darling? We are happy aren’t we?”
