Addendum to the Course Syllabus •Ways to Begin to think about the Essay Exams: 1. Respond directly and succinctly to the question. Generally an essay question does not expect or ask you to write all you know about the issue. I expect quality writing. 2. Do not reiterate the reading, but where necessary make reference to the material to support your points and show you have read. 3. Demonstrate a good understanding of the material covered by the question but contextualize and connect to broader issues. 4. It is important to think critically and demonstrate independent original reasoning regarding the material addressed in the essay. 5. The dates for the essay exams will be announced in class. •Guide to the Course Readings: There is no day-to-day schedule for the readings. Instead, complete the readings by the end of the corresponding week even if the class is behind in the weekly schedule. I do not usually discuss the reading in my lectures as there is too much material to cover in class.
