Gestalt psychology: A different kind of German psychology - Rallying against Wundtanian psychology - Formal beginning in 1912 - Perception of movement-> article-> they published a paper that marked the start of Gestalt - Behaviorism started in 1914-> thru today - Gestalt psychology=> “whole” or “form” or “shape”. - Molecular (base, small) vs. molar (big, entirety, whole). - They thought people Lose essence of consciousness if they use molecular level. - Gestalt- take the molar approach - They argue that they’re native( nature) perceptual tendencies - They argue that people are born with perception that is pre-programmed (innate) to perceive in certain way. Key players : - Wertheimer, Koffka, Kohler Heretical views:- against established doctrine Gestalt principles of perceptual organizations:- - Whole is greater than the sum of its parts - Idea:- we perceive wholes, not pieces. Perception occurs spontaneously - Most are unlearned ( they are innate) - However, individual factors do influence perception
