Psychoanalysis=> 1895 Freud and Boyer published studies on Hysteria; 1895-present date Psychoanalytic psychology:- Central Tenets=> role of the unconscious; plays a significant role in personality. Unconscious originates in early experience Unconscious is dynamic (motivational and constantly changing). Other themes:- Developed from psycho therapy- how data were collected in psychoanalysis. Source of data=> comes from patients- they study self-reports of patients and interpretations of analysts. They used projective techniques. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939):- He was influenced by: the zeitgeist in intellectual and cultural world where he was working at; discussion of unconscious. Somatic (medical model- causes of illness is chemical imbalances; lesions of brain; root of illness is something biological or chemical) vs. psychic (causes of mental illness is mental, emotional, or psychological problems-doesn’t have to be in the brain). Freud was against somatic model
