Cognitive Psychology 1/6/11 9:24 AM January 20, 2011 Lecture 4 – Perception & Pattern Recognition, Part II Objectives : (1.) To understand the 3 general approaches to pattern recognition, including their pros and cons. (2.) To understand the distinction between bottom-up and top-down processing and how the latter gives rise to context effects. (3.) To understand how experimental results have demonstrated conceptual- driven processing in language perception. Notes : - General approaches to explaining pattern recognition: Template theory – Have a set of mental templates that you use when you want to recognize and object/thing o When you want to recognize a pattern, you take the pattern and compare it to set of mental templates stored in LTM; try to find the best match o Would need millions/billions of templates in LTM ! Different fonts, different angles, etc o Limitation: Problem of invariance – objects vary, do we have templates for every different type (size, shape, angle) of object? NO

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
