January 26 th , 2010 Chapter 2 State under IL Religion Ethnicity Shared past Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of a State (1933) A state must have a: Population Population does not need to be permanent (meaning all the people must reside within the boundaries of the state at all times) Because we live in a globalized world Territory Kashmir – territorial conflict Ethiopia and eritrea – territorial conflict Some part of the border can be defined and some part of the border can be loosely defined Borders need not be precisely defined Countries that have border disputes that are still recognized as a state China Vietnam Israel Russia Government Ways of figuring out if there is a government: Monopoly on power, able to provide basic services (Haiti?), provide security to its people, do the people render habitual obedience to the government?, is the government able to collect taxes? The ability to conduct foreign relations
