International organizations United nations – the largest international organization in the world today Its primary purpose is to promote international peace and security Tries to prevent outbreak of conflicts between states Made up of six major organs General assembly All the members of the UN The closest thing we have to a world parliament Does not make laws Passes UN general assembly resolutions, which are non-binding Approves the budget Involved in the selection of the judges of the ICJ Appoints the UN secretary general Six committees in the general assembly Committee on disarmament and international security Economic and financial affairs Legal committee – responsible for making drafts of international treaties General assembly is always the weaker body compared to the security council General assembly only one time took the initiative and sent troops – during the Korean war Security council The most powerful organ of the united nations It is the responsibility of the security council to determine threats to peace – THIS IS WHY IT IS THE MOST POWERFUL ORGAN Can impose sanctions
