Unformatted text preview: A P r a c t i c a l G u i d e f o r P r o f e s s i o n a l E n g i n e e r s E T H I C S I N P R A C T I C E 1 October 2000 Dear member, Ethics in Practice - A Practical Guide for Professional Engineers The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee of the HKIE and Hong Kong Ethics Development Centre (HKEDC) of the ICAC are pleased to jointly launch the Ethics in Practice - A Practical Guide for Professional Engineers to all members of the HKIE. The CPD Committee has been actively promoting CPD activities to HKIE members, especially in the areas of professional interest. Professional ethics is one of the areas of growing concern. In fact, many members might have experience in their career in which they have to handle ethical dilemmas. While the Rules of Conduct of the HKIE requires every member to observe, it appears that there is insufficient reference materials available to members in the local context. This Guide has been developed to fill this gap. It provides a clear framework for ethical decision making with an exploration of common ethical issues in theoretical concepts and by case studies. It is believed that this Guide shall serve as a useful reference to members of the HKIE in assisting their understanding to the Rules of Conduct and the considerations required in ethical decision making. In facilitating our evaluation on this project, the CPD Committee and the HKEDC would be most grateful if you could let us have your comments on the Guide by sending us the enclosed evaluation form to the HKEDC by fax at 2117 0521. Your comments would be carefully considered for future reference. Yours sincerely, Ir James Kwan Chairman CPD Committee The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers ' & # ( - # & 3 4 5 & 6 6 $ $ 7 * & 7 * & # ( 8 7 * # ( 9 7 * 0 7 * .
