Specific Gravity Fill a flask with distilled-deaired water up to the 200ml mark, weigh their mass and measure the temperature of the water. Put about 50-60 grams of oven dried coarse soil into the volumetric flask. Fill the flask to two-thirds full with distilled-deaired water, and then to the 200ml mark after removing the air with a vacuum pump. Obtain the mass of the flask containing the soil-water mixture for specific gravity calculation. Relative Density Minimum Density – Tube Method Obtain the volume and the mass of the mold. Place the collar on top and the tube in the center. After the tube has been filled with sand, remove it vertically allowing the sand to overfill the mold. Screen the excess soil off of the top of the mold and weigh it. Do this three times and average the mass for void ratio calculation. Minimum Density – Funnel Method Obtain the volume and the mass of the mold. Place the collar on top and use the funnel to fill the mold in a circular spiral patter, keeping the same height of sand inside the funnel at all times. Screen the excess soil off of the top of the mold and weigh it.
