Michael Tam (mht347) TTH 2:00-3:00 Clock Knot: an Engineering Marvel. A crisp wind blows on a warm Saturday morning. As I progress towards the Chemical Engineering building on the north east corner of campus, I notice something out of the corner of my eye, something I usually pass without a second glance. There, right across the bridge that passes over Dean Keaton, is the Clock Knot , a huge abstract sculpture that adorns the hill it rests on as if it were a crown. Adjacent to the Clock Knot is the Mechanical Engineering building; the sculpture’s placement is of no small coincidence. Its physical characteristics are a testament to the innovative strength of the Cockrell School of Engineering. As they say in real estate, “Location, location, location.” The location of this statue is very important in the form of the piece. The environment around the piece actually seems to be part of the piece itself. The site of clock knot is open. It is very inviting, as if it were a giant welcome mat. The site encourages one to walk around, or even look from underneath. The enormity of the monument and the fact that the sculpture has no “face or true front” seems to cue the appreciator to look at it from all viewpoints. My favorite viewpoint is accessible by laying down on one’s back underneath the statue and gazing upward. This vantage point emphasizes the size, and complexity of the circular portion in the middle.
