Islamist Movements in the Middle East Hizballah of Lebanon Founded in 1982 during the Lebanese civil war o Called for increased role of Islam (Shiite) o Reaction to Israeli military invasion of Lebanon Maintains armed wing while participating in the mainstream political system Uses threat of violence against domestic actors to wield influence Governing council (12 people) o Rotates every 2 years Original objectives o Improve political representation and economic viability for Shi’a community o Incorporate Islamic principles into Lebanese political system o Establish an Islamic state in Lebanon based on Iranian model 1992 Elections o part of political system from the very beginning o changed goal of making Lebanon into an Islamic republic reform o Allowed to continue violent resistance against Israel o 8/128 seats won after this, they continue to grow Today o March 8 Alliance Ruling coalition since 23 January 2011 Nominated Najib Mikati as PM
