Chapter 8: Behavior in Social and Cultural Context “EQ” Emotional Intelligence EQ includes: self-awareness, impulse control, persistence, self-motivation, ability to recognize emotions in others, and social agility. People with high EQ can better manage the difficulties of life. Skills to help make you successful, goes above and beyond normal intelligence. To what extent are cognitive ability and emotions independent? o Not totally independent Is EQ affected by the same environmental factors as IQ? o Research suggests that it may Can EQ be fostered or enhanced? o Yes it can be, but depends of the theorist. Cognitive Dissonance Cognitions Conflict Tension (cognitive dissonance) Efforts to reduce dissonance: reject belief, change behavior, deny the evidence, rationalize Behavior conflicts with attitude or belief Tension Efforts to reduce dissonance o Highly motivated to reduce and get rid of tension o Change attitude to make it consistent with behavior
