I will be in my office after this class from 2 to 3 on Monday and Wednesday, if you have questions. The reading for Wednesday is online: it is the first reading from Aquinas. REVIEW Platos aristocracy is a rigid caste system with philosopher kings who rule because they love wisdom and are just. Wealth disrupts this society, so a system a feudal system of honor and competition for nobility is created, where wealth is collected by the nobles. TIMOCRACY The system of courage and honor is an endless cycle: the smart people reject it for the unrestricted pursuit of wealth: OLIGARCHY The poor revolt against the rich in the name of freedom of all to do whatever they like. The majority rules: DEMOCRACY THE DEMOCRATIC PERSON Democracy results in a society in which all appetites compatible with the universal democratic value of freedom are allowed. All desires and values are considered equal, insofar as they are compatible with everyone elses freedom, which means that reason is always rejected. Reason says that the rational, just and harmonious life is best: appetites and emotions are problematic. Such a view is ridiculed as boorish and illiberal: tradition and virtue are rejected. There is no order or necessity in the democratic life: but it is called pleasant and free. Freedom and individualism results in a society fixated on worthless pleasures....
