Don’t tip-toe Show them you care, even if you don’t know them very well Help person talk about and clarify problem. They may feel frustrated, confused Listen carefully. They’re in mental/physical pain. Might not know why. Be there to help them about the issue. YOU DON’T NEED TO FIX THE PROBLEM Suicide is often viewed as final solution to overwhelming problem. May have difficulty sorting out alternative solutions to the problem(s) he/she faces Encourage them to seek professional assistance. Crisis hotline. If immediate danger exists, don’t leave person alone. If no immediate threat, have a plan of action regarding professional help before leaving the person. Have them promise to call you before doing any harm to him/herself. Offer to accompany him/her to mental health professional
