Abie Feuerstein Feb. 19, 2009 Social psych Causes of Stereotypes Heuristics o Simple mental strategies used for making fast , efficient decisions and judgments (quick decisions based on relatively short amount of info) o Reduces complex problem-solving to a simple process. o Downside: they might not give us a perfectly accurate assessment or judgment. E.g. is stimulus bill good? (we cant read the whole bill and we don’t understand everything, so we rely on heuristics to understand the question) Heuristics Availability heuristic (how available it is in one’s memory) (it’s what makes us not see the world in the same way) o If a vivid example of an event is easily recalled, we assume the event is more common than it really is. E.g. how dangerous is flying? Compared to the flu? E.g. Islamic terrorists o Explains how our personal experiences bias our social perception E.g. seeing a car accident Representativeness heuristic o Assuming a person belongs to a group because he/she fits the stereotype of
