Highway capacity and level of service Freeways (basic fwy segments, fwy weaving areas, ramps and ramp junctions, interchange ramp terminials) Multilane highways Two-lane highways Urban streets Signalized intersections Unsignalized intersections Pedestrian facilities Transit systems Basic freeway segments: Traffic Flow Rate – traffic flow in vehicles per unit time. Traffic volume – traffic flow rate in vehicles per hour. Freeway capacity – the maximum sustained 15-minute flow rate, expressed in passenger cars per hour per lane, that can be accommodated by a uniform freeway segment under prevailing traffic and roadway conditions in one direction of flow. Level of service (LOS) – qualitative measure and ranking of the traffic operational conditions experienced by users of a facility under specific roadway, traffic, and traffic control (if present) conditions. Current practice designates six levels of service ranging from A to F, with
