29 1 Chapter 9 Number Words and Metaphors Roman numerals are for accounting: I II III IIII V VI VII VIII VIIII X. Roman numerals don’t have a zero. Arabic numerals have a zero (place holder) so that they can be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. Since Arabic numerals are not ad-hoc (ct Roman Numerals: IV, IX, C, M, L, etc.) they can also be used for huge numbers Round numbers have lots of zeros. The zero in Arabic is a dot—a zero with a circumference of zero. (Nilsen & Nilsen 212-213)
