Mini-Lecture 11: Cinematic Divergences I This is intended as a directed viewing guide, not as a comprehensive discussion of all of the divergences between The Fellowship of the Ring and Jackson’s film adaptation of it. For a more comprehensive list of differences between the two, please visit The Encyclopedia of Arda website’s Movie Goer’s Guides link on the left sidebar. For the link to the Encyclopedia of Arda, Please consider the following (you may want to make some notes in the space provided): 1. The passage of time. In the epic, much time passes between Frodo’s receiving the ring after Bilbo’s departure and his own eventual departure. How does the film’s treatment of this sequence differ from the epic’s? Consider why and how Frodo finds out he must leave Bag End; how it comes about that Sam, Merry, and Pippin accompany him; and how Gandalf learns about the ring itself. 2.
