Production of cultural artifacts- how they came about and why Content of cultural artifacts- what they are and what research has been done on them Audience and cultural artifacts- audiences relationship with the cult. art. Sociologists or political scientists (1940s-1950s) American Researchers- emphasized how media affected society’s attitudes, behaviors, and voting preferences. -going into research thought they would find a strong influence from media, but found the opposite at this time. Mass media content had minimal effect on ppl’s attitudes and voting, etc. -a lot of people consume media that already agrees with their voting preferences and attitudes etc. So the media just reinforced the beliefs they already held. Selective Attention, Perception, and Retention (see bullet above) -we are selective about media we consume, and only perceive and retain the information we already cared about / reaffirms our beliefs.
