Differences between Aztec and Maya Mr.Di Salle CHW3M1-01 Masha Nenakhova December 16th, 2017 Mayans and Aztecs are two ancient Mexican and Central and Southern American civilizations that existed between 1,800 and 500 years ago that have their own written language, using hieroglyphs. However these two civilizations have three main differences and they are : the calendar; political,economic and social life; and religion. The first difference between Mayans and Aztecs is their calendars. “Haab” is Maya's calendar which is improper designation of the time-measuring system employed by the people of Mesoamerica. The calendar system was invented by the Olmec about 35 centuries ago and later inherited by all the cultures and ethnic groups of Mesoamerica like Zapotecs and Mexicas. “Haab” has two versions: the so-called Mayan calendar and Nahuatl or Mexica calendar, both of them are based on the interrelationship of a sacred year of 260 days with the natural year of 365 days, which forms cycles of 52 years called “New Fires”. The Aztec Calendar also known as “ Stone of the Sun” is a profuse representation of the god Tonatiuh who is associated with the Fifth Sun.
