Krizia Gupiteo 7 October 2009 Locker # C7 Experiment # 3 Dihydroxylation of Cyclohexene Outline I. Oxone Reaction Mixture 1. Dissolve 0.40 g oxone in 2.0 mL water by shaking in a sealed vial. 2. Dissolve 100 µL of cyclohexene in 2.0 mL of acetone in a 5-mL conical vial. 3. Cool the cyclohexene solution in an ice-bath. 4. Add the oxone solution drop-wise over 5 minutes with swirling in the ice-bath. 5. Remove the vial from the ice-bath and allow the reaction to sit for 20 minutes. 6. Add 0.1 mL of concentrated HCl to the reaction mixture drop-wise with swirling. 7. Allow the reaction to sit for 10 minutes, swirling occasionally. II. Thin Layer Chromatography 1. Draw a line 1 cm from the bottom of the TLC plate with a pencil. 2. Make 4 marks along that line and label them A, B, C, D. 3. Spot the corresponding mixture to the appropriate spot on the labeled TLC. Hold the TLC plate by the edges and never directly put your fingers on the silica surface of the plate. A. 2-mL of authentic cis-diol in 1-butanol.
