Positive Psychology 2/22/10 What is Explanatory Style? The manner in which tyou habitually explain to yourself why events happen 3 critical dimensions to explanatory style Permanence – how stable the reason is over time vs the reason can change Pervasiveness – how global the reason is across situations vs specific to the situation Personalization – how much I am responsible for the situation vs external reasons Internalization vs externalization Hope Seligman Snyder: a positive motivational state that is based on an interavtively derived sense of successful agency (goal-directed energy) and pathways (planning to meet those goals) - it is primarily a way of thinking (emotions secondary) - -has both trait (stable views of their capacities to produce routes to goals and State (situation Specific) elements - hope involves o having goals o confidence & specificity in the pathway to get to the goal (both o confidence in your ability to use the pathways to reach the goal – energy/agency o emotions are secondary – they affect the initiation of pathways and
