Departmental Psychology: The temptation to present a catalog of changes masks the continuity process in which the individual gains increasing mastery over the environment and self by integrating motivational readiness and skills so far with information and reinforcement of the current environment. - what types of stimulation that the kids get closer and closer to reach a goal - not necessarily goal itself that is milestone, really an unfolding process - how do we do studies on infants who can’t communicate verbally/physically respond? How we study infants - orienting reflex o kids will (infants) eye gaze/look @ something that is new in the environment o naturally drawn as infants to novel stiumuli o faces o eventually it will become familiar - habituation o familiar stimuli. Stuff gets familiar, don’t want to look at it anymore o remove stimulus for period of time → dishabituate - dishabituation o new again after removing stimulus for a period of time o headphone: taught when hear sound, ma: doll flash in corner o doll: new: orient to it/look for it o learn if hear sound: doll flahses, turn eyes and gazes before it actually flashes o young: infant: phonemes
