11/22/10 Psychological Disorders : Criteria for Assessment -Abnormality - qualitative: behavior deviates from cultural norm - quantitative: behavior deviates from statistical average -Maladapativeness : behavior seriously disrupts social and/or vocational life -Personal Distress : subjective feelings that accompany the disorder (e.g. depression, anxiety) Signal Detection Theory: two different types of errors False alarm- Say someone has a psychological disorder when they don’t (they end up taking medication that they don’t need and utilizing expensive treatments and resources, was more popular in the 70s) Miss- Say that someone doesn’t have a psychological disorder when they do (more popular after Regan administration because it was cheaper>> this lead to increased homelessness) Important aspect of diagnosis: which way are you going to judge on the side of caution/ without caution Psychiatrist felt system was floundering in 1940s. Come together to establish what causes/symptoms
