Intro Psych 11/29/10 Pyschological disorders: Major Categories Schizophrenia: -roughly 1% of population -must have symptoms for 6 months -early adulthood onset common -rule of thirds- 1/3 of people diagnosed and treated, drug is very effective and they return to functioning normally, second 1/3 of people find drug to be effective but then drug stops working (get habituated to it) and tend to be in and out of institutions for life, last 1/3 of people need to be in institutionalized care throughout their life- have sever schizophrenia Types: 1.) Paranoid type - preoccupation with delusions or auditory hallucinations. Little or no disorganized speech, disorganizes or catatonic behavior, or inappropriate or flat affect. Thought process is still organized 2.) Disorganized type- disorganized thoughts, speech, and behavior. Their neural networks are off, inappropriate affect, no organized pattern. Delusions are fragmentary if present 3.) Catatonic type - extreme motor immobility (put themselves in an awkward
