ART 365 LATE MEDIEVAL ART January 24, 2011 I. The Sanctuary Screen ****Office hours Thursday and Friday, Thursday 2-230, Friday 12pm A. What is it? Placed near the sanctuary and covers the altar. The altar is in the apse (bema) and its east oriented. Structure stands at east end and covers area of the altar. Keeps the layman and the clergy separate. B. Why do this? To protect the sacred ritual that is taking place there. One function is to demarcate the most sacred space within the church. C. Narthex nave transition from terrestrial realm to heavenly realm and as u progress towards east end, you are stopped at this most sacred place. There is a hierarchy in the floor plan of these churches. Makes this symbolism clear (function of the screen) D. Gives the bema certain special associations. 1. Iconostasis: stand for icons to be put on but this isn’t what we see in byzantine churches though 2. What are the associations with the bema: where u has the altar table and the Eucharist.
