The Kind of Knowledge We Have ¡ Lexical ambiguity The Kind of Knowledge We Have ¡ Structural Ambiguity: Flying planes can be dangerous. Old men and women left the sinking ship first. The cop shot the man with a gun. The Kind of Knowledge We Have ¡ Synonymous sentences: John picked up his laundry at 4. John picked his laundry up at 4. A cat is on the roof. There is a cat on the roof. Linguistic Creativity ¡ There is no limit to the number of sentences we can produce, understand, and make judgments about. ¡ In this sense, our linguistic knowledge is creative , i.e., unbounded and not tied to a particular context or time. Linguistic Complexity ¡ Sentences can be increasingly complex: John is asleep. The President is asleep. The Chairman of the Linguistics Dept. is asleep. The rightmost person in the first row is asleep. The rightmost person in the first row of the theatre is asleep. The person immediately to the left of the rightmost person in the first row is asleep. The person behind the person immediately to the left of the rightmost person in the first row is asleep. No Longest Sentence The dog barked at the cat who chased the mouse that ran under the house that was built with bricks that ... Grammaticality Judgment ¡ But if we modify the order of words in a sentence, or omit certain words, we get sentences that violate the rules of the language: ¢ we may get weird sentences.
