(2009) Evolution , 2nd edition (Sinauer Publ.) What this course is about Peter Medawar (Nobel laureate, 1960) said " the alternative to thinking in evolutionary terms is not to think at all ". The goal of this course is to build critical thinking skills about how evolution works. Why does evolution take place? Can simple, everyday processes generate complex biological traits? How does biological variation originate (novel alleles, traits and species)? What evolutionary forces act to preserve or eliminate variation? What role do random processes play in evolution? How do different genes influence one another's evolution? How have organisms diversified over time from common ancestors? What are species, and what evolutionary forces might cause them to exist? How can mathematical models be used as tools for analyzing complex problems in evolution?
