Biol 104, Dr. Espinoza, S10 Study Sheet for Chapter 37 Neurons & Nervous System Modified with permission from Dr. Denny Smith Some of this information will be found in your readings, some in your lecture notes. 1. What are the functions of the nervous system of any animal? 2. Provide a general description of the evolution (change) of the nervous systems in animals. (Include examples of invertebrate nervous systems and define cephalization, bilateral symmetry, true nervous systems and ganglia.) 3. Give a general description of the nervous systems of vertebrates. (Include the three main divisions of a vertebrate brain and the functions of each.) 4. What are the major components of the human central nervous system and peripheral nervous system? {List the parts found in each. You will find a summary of the CNS in the second lecture ppt that is more detailed.} 5. Distinguish between neurons and neuroglial cells. Give examples of neuroglial cells. 6. Be able to label the structures of a “typical” neuron (motor), and indicate where it receives a signal and in which direction does it send a signal along which part. 7. What is a nerve fiber and a myelin sheath? What is the purpose of the myelin sheath? Which neuroglia cells are responsible for the myelin sheath and in which part of the nervous system are they found (2 different types)?
