Channel open allowing ions to Fow through Neurotransmitter receptors • Embedded in the plasma membrane of post- synaptic cell. • Either are ion channels themselves (ionotropic, or ligand-gated ion channel) or interface with ion channels (metabotropic or G-protein coupled receptors). (Metabotropic receptors) Neurotransmitter receptors • Embedded in the plasma membrane of post-synaptic cell. • Either are ion channels themselves (ionotropic, or ligand-gated ion channel) or interface with ion channels (metabotropic or G-protein coupled receptors). • Ultimately, the binding of neurotransmitter causes opening of channels and ions Fow. This can raise or lower the membrane potential depending on the ion concentration gradients and the particular ion Fowing in or out. The acetyl choline (ACh) receptor • ion-channel receptor • ACh binds receptor- opens up • ACh causes ACh receptor to open transiently and stochastically (patch clamp studies). • An action potential causes several millions of Ach molecules to be released simultaneously, transiently opening many channels. • The summed current Fow into the cell is called the end plate current (EPC). Current Fow changes the potential of the muscle, the EPP, which can trigger an action potential.
