The “Issue” Order/Functionalist  Perspective Conflict  Perspective Ethnic  stratification Moore  hypothesis:  explanation  of why ≠  exists in  society  Either the ≠ itself  meets a specific social  need  OR  the ≠ is the  result of another social  condition that is useful  to overall society It is a pattern that  serves the interest of  the dominant, elite  group in a society  Stratification is useful for society because it  matches the most qualified people with the  most important jobs (i.e. jobs requiring high  skill and extensive training) Society will operate most effectively when  the most competent people are motivated to  pursue these jobs High rewards (i.e. salary, etc.) serve as the  motivation for these jobs  The hypothesis assumes equal and free  social mobility for ALL and between  generations Conflict theorists argue that most  social inequality is INHERITED not earned Ethnic stratification is a barrier to the  assumed equal social mobility, which
