ARE 157 HOMEWORK 2 Winter 2011 due Monday, Feb. 7th at start of class M.Whitney 1 (34 pts) Forecasting using data smoothing. a.(16) Go to the US Census Bureau = s A Monthly and Annual Retail Trade @ web page. http://www.census.gov/retail/ Click on the "Monthly Retail Trade Report, retail and food service sales (Excel (1992-present))" On a spreadsheet, we want to create a column of data for monthly sales of Gasoline Stations, (NAICS Code 447), not seasonally adjusted. Use monthly data beginning Nov 2005 and ending October 2010. You will have 60 monthly observations. Hint 1: Notice the data sheet only shows 2010 when you first open it. There is a row of tabs across the bottom of the page that contains the other years' data (2009, 2008, etc) Hint 2: The easiest way to acquire the data is to copy and paste it. However, the original data is in rows, and we want it in column format. After you create a single row of data for the entire time period, you can use Excel's "transpose" command to change your row into a column. I will post a link on Smartsite, under Resources, with instructions for using this command. We will forecast this variable for the period May 2006 through Oct 2010, using 8 time series models:
